Pulmonary Function Tests (Spirometry)
Pulmonary Function Tests (Spirometry)
Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs), particularly Spirometry, are simple and non-invasive tests used to assess how well your lungs are functioning. These tests measure the amount of air you can inhale and exhale, as well as how efficiently your lungs deliver oxygen to the body.
Spirometry is commonly used to diagnose and monitor respiratory conditions such as Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and other lung disorders. During the test, the patient is asked to take a deep breath and exhale forcefully into a device called a spirometer, which records accurate measurements.
This test is quick, painless, and highly effective, helping doctors in early diagnosis and creating appropriate treatment plans.
Why is Spirometry Done?
Spirometry is recommended to diagnose, monitor, and assess various lung conditions, including:
- Asthma
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Chronic bronchitis
- Emphysema
- Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)
- Other breathing disorders
It is also used to evaluate lung function before surgery and to monitor the effectiveness of ongoing treatments.
